After I shut down my last startup Staffjoy, I open-sourced our code to let anybody use it. The repositories became popular, and companies began contacting me to ask for help deploying the software onto their servers. At that time we were prototyping Moonlight, so I conducted a small test - I linked to Moonlight's homepage with a badge that said "contractors."
That badge has resulted in tens of thousands of dollars worth of projects and has helped several large companies continue using Staffjoy after the shutdown. The best part is that the companies were willing to pay for help.
Today we are launching “Official Support” for open-source projects. Open-source maintainers can embed a link to Moonlight’s contractors that know their technology. Every time a client joins using the link, the maintainer can get paid up to $150.
How it works:
- Sign up for Moonlight as a contractor.
- Email us to get a Github badge and to mark your project as officially supported.
- Embed the badge in your README or website.
- Clients can sign up using your unique referral link (You can track signups on your settings page).
- After the client spends $1,500 on Moonlight, we send you $150 cash through Stripe.
Helping creators capture the value that they create
Open-source maintainers have created tools that save companies millions of dollars. However, existing funding models outside of full-time employment are donation-based. Even the most successful examples of donation-based campaigns (such as Vue.js) pay maintainers significantly less than employers pay an entry-level engineer to use their technology. Moonlight wants to help these maintainers capture value during the use of their technology. To do that, we are paying them cash for referring projects to Moonlight.
Today's launch is a first iteration of the "Official Support" program, and we are looking for feedback from the community for how to improve it. Our goal is to help these open-source creators capture some of the immense value that they create. We also want to help improve open-source communities by creating a job market for their technologies. Getting companies to deploy your code creates a positive feedback loop that results in more contributors and more users.

Answers to questions you might have:
Why don’t I get paid until the client spends $1,500?
We aim to give the profit we make on the first $1,500 in invoices to the referrer. If you have a large open-source community and have strong opinions about different arrangements, please contact us, and we are happy to discuss them!
How is this different than Moonlight’s contractor referral program?
The contractor referral program gives free processing credit to new clients, so it pays less of a referral bonus. If you prefer to use the contractor referral program, you can!
Can I embed a badge in small or personal projects?
Yes! As an individual contractor, you can get embed code for your contractor referral link on the settings page.
If you want a badge for a specific technology, or if you want to participate in the project maintainer offer - email us to get started !
