Since Moonlight launched its contractor marketplace in February, hundreds of companies have asked for help finding full-time developers. We think that our initial focus on contract work can help to make the overall hiring process easier for companies.
We’ve learned that contract-to-hire is one of the best ways to bridge the gap between flexible remote work and long-term job placement. It allows companies to access new talent right away, and it allows developers to test out a work relationship before agreeing to a long-term commitment.
Of the 700 screened developers on Moonlight, 15% have already indicated on their profiles that they are open to full-time employment. Try posting a job, or searching for developers based on their skills in the app!
Engage top talent faster
Engineering hiring is broken, and those flaws become most apparent during the long interview process. In a normal hiring scenario, it takes an average of three months and $30k to close a full-time hire. This cost includes sourcing candidates, doing development tests, conducting interviews, and flying around candidates.
Instead of going through this long process, add a specialized developer to your team within a day. Hire candidates as contractors first, and convert them full-time after you’ve tested the relationship. Paying engineers to do the work decreases the fall-off throughout the hiring process, allows you to get work done right away, and is the quickest way to find out if a candidate is the right match for your team.
In our experience, the results of contract-to-hire work give teams concrete things to discuss about candidates - did they communicate well? Did they show expertise? How much guidance did they need? Were they detail-oriented or big-picture people? It becomes easy to answer the question, “Would I work with this person again?”
Developers end up doing hours of free work during the interview process, before understanding whether a company is a good fit for them. We think that contract-to-hire is the most efficient way to identify and engage great talent. It is respectful of developer time, and it creates an egalitarian hiring process.
Plus, even if you choose not to hire somebody full-time, you get work done right away, and can continue to work with them on a contract basis!
What it costs
Contract work: Moonlight processes payments and adds a 15% processing fee to the developer's hourly rate.
